History of the Typeface

Hundar began with me experimenting with fonts and trying to draw a semi-serif. As nice as this first experimentation was, it ended up in an incomplete font that had lots of rough edges, mistakes, and issues. It made me realise that I had a lot to learn and practice, and working on a new serif typeface became the means towards that much needed practice.

That serif typeface became Darwin Serif. It grew through trial, error, and the amazing feedback of a person named Siriris, to whom I'm extremely grateful. Throughout the development of the project, I tried out ideas and kept aiming to balance an unusual style with readability and warmth.

Darwin Serif was named after my dog Darwin, but eventually I discovered that another typeface already had that name. Thus the typeface needed a new name, and I ended up settling on Hundar, the Swedish word for dogs. More or less around the same time, I also reworked much of the design of Hundar, bringing the project to its current version.

Project goals

The goals below describe what this project is meant to eventually achieve. For the current state of the typeface, see the Progress page.

  1. Free & open source

Hundar is licensed under the SIL Open Font License. It is free for anyone to use, and will remain so.

  2. Language coverage

The goal is to (eventually) cover all languages using the Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek scripts listed in Hyperglot, bringing a consistent design to a wide range of writing.

  3. Optical sizes

Optical sizes should serve small footnotes (6 pt), body text (10–12 pt), display (32 pt), and book covers (48 pt and above).

  4. Linguistics

Extensive support for linguistics, including the International Phonetic Alphabet, Americanist phonetic notation, and extIPA.

  5. Medieval studies

Extensive coverage for medieval studies, following the characters defined by the Medieval Unicode Font Initiative.

  6. Mathematics

A comprehensive, high-quality family of matching mathematical fonts, together with accompanying LaTeX and Typst packages.
